Win 10 Crash – Windows 10 Upgrade Error Code 0xc000000f

We recently rebuilt a Windows 10 machine and it was running an older version of Window 10 and the Norton Internet Security from Comcast. After running Windows Updates, upon reboot, the PC would enter Automatic Repair. The Automatic Repair would fail every time. Eventually, we got it to boot by continuously pressing F8. But before we got to the Windows login screen, we were greeted by the following screen:

Recovery
Your PC/device needs to be repaired
The operating system couldn’t be loaded because a critical system driver is missing or contains errors
File:\Windows.old\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\N360x64\160B000.029\symELAM.sys
Error code: 0xc000000f

The file referenced “symELAM.sys” is part of Norton Security.

The simple fix was to uninstall Norton Internet Security, download the latest version, and reinstall it.

We also ran the System Integrity Checker by right-clicking the Start button and choosing Command Prompt (or Powershell) (Admin). Then run:

sfc /scannow

Now the system is purring along happily now.
